In the autumn and winter, retreatants sit before the fire as they think about the day’s prayer, quietly read their Bibles, or pen a few notes in a journal. The oak-paneled living room, whose focus is a huge fireplace, is now reserved in the evenings for prayer and meditation. Not surprisingly, the rooms are currently used for purposes far different from what the original builders intended.
